The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

In the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
